Bright Cycling Trip 6th to 10th December 2018

MRCC On the Rail Trail

Back by popular demand is our 6th annual trip to the Murray To Mountains (MTM) Rail Trail district. Over the last 5 years an average of over 25 riders and supporters traveled to Bright for 2-4 days of riding, feasting and socialising. This year we will stay in Bright at the same caravan park as in 2017. The dates are from Thursday 6th December to Monday 10th December inclusive. As in previous years, I expect that some will only be able to make it for the weekend, so the plan will be to ride the Trail on the weekend.

The MTM Rail Trail is safe, attractive riding on a sealed path suitable for road bikes. See the Murray to Mountains Website for maps and information. Our program (see below) accommodates riders of different levels of fitness. For example, over the last three years one group has ridden from Myrtleford to Lake Buffalo (not on the Trail) whilst the remainder of the group has taken on the more challenging ride up Mount Buffalo. Mt Buffalo is part of the 7 Peaks Alpine Ascent Challenge see our web page: Macedon Ranges Cycling – 7 Peaks Challenge for information about joining this challenge.

Ride Program

Mt Buffalo Ride 2016

We have planned two ‘feature’ rides on the rail trail for those that can only participate for a weekend, with the shorter ride on the Sunday to allow riders to get back home at an agreeable time after the ride. However, the ride program might change depending on rider interest, and weather.

Thursday: 6th December
The preferred option is likely to be a ride into the attractive Buckland valley and back, commencing around 3 pm. An additional possibility will be to ride from Bright to Myrtleford and return, for those who will miss this attractive ride if climbing Falls Creek on the Sunday.

Friday: 7th December
Mt Buffalo climb or Lake Buffalo ride, meet up for lunch in Myrtleford

Saturday: 8th December
Myrtleford to Beechworth and return via the rail trail (About 85k). Short riders can opt for Everton to Beechworth and return (about30k), involving a 15k hill climb. With the help of car pooling, it may be possible to choose to ride Everton to Beechworth, then return by bike to Myrtleford to be picked up by those driving cars from Everton back to Bright. This option would be about 57k. This helps those who want to ride a good section of the trail, but may find the full trip too long.

Lake Buffalo 2015

Lake Buffalo 2015

Sunday: 9th December
Bright to Myrtleford for lunch and return to Bright. (About 60k, but a reasonably flat ride, with a lunch break in between). Or the Falls Creek climb for the 7 Peaks riders.

Monday: 10th December
Return home.

Keep in mind that all ride routes are provisional, and in previous years some riders have chosen to vary the program.

Pine Valley Tourist ParkParticipants can choose to stay wherever they wish, and need to book their own accommodation. However, I am suggesting the PIne Valley Tourist Park, 7-15 Churchill Avenue, Bright. (ph. 1800 069 091) see Pine Valley Tourist Park website. They have offered to hold most of their cabins for us for the time being, and will give members of our club a 12% discount on their usual fees for stays of 3 nights or more. We have stayed at this location for the past 2 years now, and we have found it more than satisfactory. There are quite positive reviews on Trip Advisor – including from at least one cycling group, and the park is quite close to Bright. Please note that although the park has reserved cabins for the club, if they receive outside interest the accommodation options may dry up quickly. We have had to make adjustments to our program in the past due to accommodation pressures. Those planning to participate are encouraged to consider paying an accommodation deposit sooner rather than later.

Cost of accommodation creeps upwards each year, but is comparatively inexpensive, and depends on which type of cabin or camp site you choose, and whether or not you share. Remember, if staying at least 3 nights, to deduct the 12% discount when examining rate options.

Anyone wishing to share a 2 or 3 B/R cabin can either seek out someone to share with for themselves, or contact me and I will aim to help riders link up. I’m aware that there may be possible sensitivities with regards to sharing, and I would endeavour to handle these requests sensitively.
