Thursday Ride – Woodend – 23rd January 2020

3 foolhardy members turned up this morning for today’s ride. Weather conditions were cold, wet with a strong northerly wind blowing, just like a normal mid winter ride. Conditions did not improve during the ride and if anything they got worse with the rain stinging and in our faces for the early part of the ride so we shortened the ride.

We rode the normal short Woodend weekend ride out to the Carlshrue Roadhouse and back via Cheveley Road plus Russells Road, Crows Road for a distance of 40km. Towards the end of the ride conditions eased slightly with the ran stopping and a tailwind for the last portion.

The only good point of the mornning was the warmth of the cafe for the usual chatter and refreshments before heading home to dry out followed by cleaning all the muck off our bikes.

Sunday Ride – Gisborne – 19th January 2020

23 members arrived in Gisborne on a foggy start to the morning. We had one new member having his first ride with the club and another new first time rider also. The fog began to disperse as the morning warmed and riding conditions were very good with a light wind blowing.

11 riders rode various versions of the medium ride to accommodate the first time riders with us and some others who had time constraints. The remaining 12 riders rode the long ride. There were multiple incidents on the long ride with the first being a tube exploding with a bang and riders ducking for cover wondering what had happened. A few km’s later another rider had a puncture. One member stayed with him as he replaced the tube and later another member also waited for them at one of the regrouping points. This left the group split with 9 and3 riders. Further up the road another incident with a front light falling off a bike.

After all the incidents most of the riders were together at the cafe for the usual chatter and refreshments before heading home. We were able to sit under a big tree at the cafe which was nice and cool and very pleasant.

Thursday Ride – Woodend – 16th January 2020

6 members arrived in Woodend for today’s ride under very trying weather conditions, a cold and very strong southerly wind. During the ride we were able to feel a couple of spits of rain but fortunately nothing more than that. The skies began to lift early and the smoke haze was not as present as in the previous days.

4 riders rode our normal 53km loop out to Newham via Bryces Lane, 3 Chain Road, Chases Lane and turning at Batters Lane for the ride back to Woodend, The other 2 riders eliminated the Bryces Lane and Chases Lane loops to avoid as much of the wind as possible for the ride back to Woodend. Ride speeds were down from previous weeks as for much of the ride the wind shifted continuously from cross tail wind to cross head wind.

Back at the cafe we were all glad to be able to sit inside out of the wind and in the warmth for the usual chatter and refreshments before heading home.

Sunday Ride – Kyneton- 12th January 2020

19 members assembled in Kyneton this morning for today’s ride. Weather conditions were not at all friendly for riding with very strong south easterly winds blowing. This made for a fast start to the ride with the tail wind, a middle section with a lot of climbing directly in the wind followed by some cross tail wind sections and then a tail wind back into Kyneton.

4 riders rode the long ride of which 3 had ridden to Kyneton and returned direct to Woodend along Ashbourne Road. The remaining 15 riders rode to the end of Youngs Road together where 3 decided to ride back to Kyneton from there. The 12 riders left then continued on the medium ride.

All the riders on the medium ride plus 1 who rode the short ride were together for the usual chatter and refreshments at the cafe before heading home. Unfortunately the 1 rider remaining on the long ride arrived back in Kyneton just after we had left the cafe as I spotted him as I was getting into my car.

Thursday Ride – Woodend – 9th January 2020

11 members arrived in Woodend this morning for today’s ride on an overcast morning with a light south wind blowing which changed to a more Easterly wind. Once we commenced riding the skies started to clear and the temperature started to warm up.

We rode our usual loop out to Newham via Bryces Lane, 3 Chain Road, Chases Lane and turning at Batters Lane for the ride back to Woodend. The wind was very friendly for a change this morning with a tail or cross tail wind for most of the ride. The ride was therefore ridden at a fast pace due to the wind assistance and average speeds were in excess of 24.3kph. to approx 26kph.

Back at the cafe it was the usual chatter and refreshments sitting under trees in the shade before heading home. It was also good to see Russell on his feet and looking very well and hoping to have  him back on the bike as soon as he is able.

Sunday Ride – Gisborne – 29th December 2019

22 members assembled in Gisborne this morning for today’s ride. Weather conditions were already warm at the earlier start time of 8.30am for the summer period. We had 1 first time rider with us and he picked a difficult ride to start with. One other member joined the ride just after the start making 23 riders altogether. As the ride commenced the wind began to strengthen and it was into the wind for the first part to either Nursery Rd or Woodend.

7 riders rode the medium ride, the remaining 16 rode the long ride or modifications of the ride. 1 rider decided he wanted to climb the South side of Mt Macedon and convinced another to go with him. 4 riders rode a slower modified long ride and the remaining 10 rode the full ride with the exception of 2 members who returned to Woodend from the top of Mt Macedon and did not descend back to Gisborne. Due to the strong Northerly wind the rides were into the wind early followed by a fast descent with the tail wind back to Gisborne. By the time the rides finished the temperature had increased into the 30 degrees.

Back at the the cafe it was the usual refreshments and chatter sitting in the shade of some big trees before we all headed home.
